The bite was good last week for both striped bass and largemouth bass. Bass anglers found active fish in the eddies before and after check gates, while others held near weed beds in the slower-moving sections of the aqueduct. Largemouth bass struck topwater poppers during the morning hours and were later caught on green and brown Roboworms rigged on drop-shots throughout the day. Striped bass responded well to cut sardines and lugworms for bait anglers, while those throwing lures found success with white and shad-colored jerkbaits and swimbaits. Catfishing was excellent after dark, with anglers catching good numbers of fish near outtake grates using chicken liver and cut baits.

Castaic sat near full pool last week, with water temperatures in the low to mid 70s and an algae bloom reported near Center Point. Bass fishing remained excellent, although anglers had to work a bit harder for bites as both largemouth and smallmouth bass transitioned into a post-spawn pattern and moved into the 10- to 20-foot zone on secondary points. Drop-shot rigs proved to be the most effective presentation due to the slime growing along the lake bottom, while C3 Baits in Purple Haze and Neptune Shad, along with dark green Senko-style baits featuring black and silver flake, accounted for plenty of catches. Striped bass remained somewhat elusive but occasionally struck jerkbaits and swimbaits intended for largemouth bass. Catfish anglers found success using cut sardines and chicken liver, with several striped bass also falling for those same baits.

Pyramid Lake remained near full pool last week, with water temperatures in the low 70s and an algae bloom continuing to develop. Striped bass fishing improved for bait anglers, as cut sardines and live worms produced limits for some fishermen, particularly around Yellowbar and the dam. During surface boils, striped bass struck Spooks, poppers, Flukes, spoons, and jerkbaits, while trolling umbrella rigs continued to be a reliable method for targeting larger fish. Bass anglers found success along bluff walls and points in 5 to 20 feet of water using Texas-rigged plastics in brown, dark green, and salt-and-pepper color patterns. The topwater bite remained strong during the early morning hours before slowing as the sun climbed higher, and jerkbaits were especially productive on windy days. Catfish anglers also enjoyed excellent action, catching good numbers of fish on cut baits, chicken liver, and dip bait.

Lake Isabella has dropped slightly and is currently sitting at approximately 62% capacity, but fishing conditions remain excellent across the lake. The bass bite has been outstanding, with anglers reporting numerous fish over 5 pounds during the past week and a few approaching the double-digit mark. Bass are widely distributed, holding shallow, along points, and around submerged trees. Productive techniques include throwing deep-diving crankbaits, Deep Mavrik and Stunna jerkbaits, green pumpkin/red flake jigs, drop-shot rigs, and Shakey Heads. Topwater presentations and flipping around flooded timber have also been producing quality fish. Crappie fishing continues to be strong, with anglers finding consistent success on minijigs worked around shallow structure and brush. Trout fishing remains productive, particularly in the North Fork area, where anglers are catching fish on chartreuse Keitechs, Hook Up Baits, and spinners, while trollers are doing well with Flicker Shads and Tasmanian Devils. The catfish bite has picked up considerably, especially during the evening hours. Lime Dyke and Engineer’s Point have been producing solid catches on cut bait, dip bait, and nightcrawlers, with both shore and boat anglers reporting steady action.

The Upper Kern River is running clear with good flows and continues to provide solid trout fishing. Stocked rainbows make up most of the catch, with the occasional brown and wild rainbow mixed in. Salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, Panther Martins, and Rooster Tails have been producing fish, while fly anglers are finding success with Parachute Adams, Stimulators, and beadhead nymphs. The Fairview and Johnsondale Bridge areas have been particularly productive during the morning and evening hours. Lower sections near Kernville are also producing trout around deeper holes and slower runs. With water temperatures reaching the low 60s, the best fishing remains early and late in the day. The Lower Kern River is providing fair to good trout fishing, with holdover rainbows being caught on salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, PowerBait, Rooster Tails, and Kastmasters. Smallmouth bass action continues to improve as water temperatures warm, with anglers finding success on soft plastics, small swimbaits, and curly-tail grubs around rocky banks and current breaks. Anglers should use caution when wading, as flows remain swift in some canyon sections. Current flows are 901 CFS on the Upper Kern and 1,580 CFS on the Lower Kern.

Kaweah appeared to have begun its summer drawdown last week, with water levels dropping rapidly to 84 percent of the lake’s storage capacity. Anglers had to work harder to locate biting bass as the rapidly changing conditions affected fish behavior. Spotted bass were caught on small finesse presentations worked around points and rocky structure, while weightless Senkos proved effective for enticing suspended fish. The crappie bite was inconsistent, although some anglers reported success in the Horse Creek area using small live minnows. Catfish remained a reliable target, with anglers finding steady action on cut anchovies and dip bait.

The lake held near 82 percent of its storage capacity last week, and fishing remained good across multiple species. Largemouth bass anglers found success with larger-profile plastic worms in purple and green pumpkin colors, landing quality fish weighing up to five pounds. Good numbers of bass were also caught on drop-shot rigs, hula grubs, and Senkos worked around points, submerged trees, and along the dam, while deep-diving crankbaits in crawfish and shad patterns produced additional bites. Crappie anglers reported steady action near the marina and around submerged trees using small live minnows, mini jigs, and small swimbaits. Catfish anglers also enjoyed reliable fishing with cut baits, chicken liver, and dip bait.

Bass fishing has remained good, with anglers reporting success on Senkos, finesse worms, creature baits, and other soft plastics in green pumpkin and natural colors. Fish are holding around submerged structure, weed lines, and shaded cover. Early morning topwater action has been productive, with frogs and poppers generating some aggressive strikes. Bluegill fishing continues to be excellent, with live worms fished under a bobber producing consistent action.

Ming Lake continues to provide good fishing opportunities for bass and bluegill, especially during the early morning and evening hours. Bass anglers are finding fish around submerged structure, weed edges, and along the dam using chatterbaits, topwater frogs, flipping baits, swimbaits, and glide baits. Bluegill-pattern and natural-colored lures have been especially effective. Bluegill remain active in the shallows, with mealworms, waxworms, and small pieces of nightcrawler producing steady action. As temperatures rise, the most productive fishing continues to occur during low-light periods.

Fishing remained good at Buena Vista Lakes last week, with bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill all providing action. Largemouth bass anglers found success around the cattails, reeds, and islands using weightless Senkos, swim jigs, chatterbaits, and drop-shot-rigged curly-tail Roboworms. Green pumpkin was the most productive color, although brown and purple patterns also generated bites. Crappie anglers filled stringers with small live minnows, mini jigs, and small swimbaits, while bluegill readily took live worms fished near the reeds. Catfish action ranged from fair to good, with anglers catching fish on nightcrawlers, chicken liver, cut baits, and dip bait.

Fishing remained good at Hart Park last week, with bass and bluegill providing the most consistent action. Largemouth bass were caught on Texas-rigged 6-inch plastic worms and Senkos in brown, green, and purple colors, while anglers targeting larger fish found success punching creature baits through the floating weed beds where many bass continued to hold. Weedless presentations proved especially effective around the heavy vegetation. Bluegill anglers enjoyed steady action by fishing redworms, mealworms, and waxworms suspended beneath a float or bobber. Catfish anglers also found reliable fishing, catching fish on dip bait, chicken liver, and cut baits, often fished on Carolina rigs.

Lake Nacimiento fell to 57 percent of its storage capacity, and anglers reported excellent fishing. Spotted bass provided outstanding topwater action throughout the lake, striking Whopper Ploppers, poppers, and walking baits. Anglers also found active fish offshore in unexpected areas and around points. Bass were also caught along the bottom in 5 to 20 feet of water on drop-shot rigs, Neko rigs, and hula grubs in baitfish, orange crusher, and green color patterns. The crappie bite remained solid near docks, over submerged brush, and rock piles, with anglers finding success using small live minnows, mini jigs, and small swimbaits. Catfish anglers also enjoyed good results, landing quality numbers of fish on cut mackerel, sardines, and chicken liver.

On Wednesday, Channel Islands boats reported a good mix of gamefish and bottom fish. The Monte Carlo's 1/2 Day AM trip with 32 anglers caught 160 sculpin, 7 barracuda, 5 whitefish, 3 calico bass, 2 sand bass, 1 yellowtail, 1 white seabass, and 1 sheephead. The Pursuit's Full Day trip with 39 anglers landed 13 yellowtail, 15 barracuda, 27 sheephead, 84 calico bass, 59 whitefish, 65 blue perch, and 3 bonito. The Thunderbird's Overnight trip with 30 anglers added 13 yellowtail, 7 barracuda, 36 calico bass, 52 whitefish, and 6 sheephead.

On Wednesday, the Aloha Spirit's Full Day trip with 26 anglers caught 128 bonito, 82 barracuda, 15 calico bass, 11 ocean whitefish, 7 white seabass, 4 halibut, and 1 yellowtail. The Graylight's Full Day trip with 6 anglers landed 30 calico bass, 6 white seabass, and 2 yellowtail. The Island Fox's 3/4 Day trip with 20 anglers caught 72 calico bass, 27 bonito, 9 yellowtail, 8 barracuda, 7 ocean whitefish, and 1 halibut. The Island Tak's Full Day trip with 8 anglers caught 43 bonito, 36 ocean whitefish, 1 yellowtail, 1 halibut, and 1 calico bass. The Mirage's Overnight trip with 19 anglers landed 190 rockfish, 39 ocean whitefish, 13 white seabass, 8 lingcod, 6 sheephead, and 4 halibut. The Endeavor's 2-Day trip with 15 anglers returned with 300 rockfish, 70 whitefish, 10 sheephead, 8 white seabass, and 5 yellowtail.

On Thursday, the Flying Fish's 1/2 Day AM trip with 21 anglers caught 200 rockcod, 8 red rockcod, 2 copper rockfish, and 2 lingcod to 12 pounds. On Wednesday, the Avenger's 3/4 Day trip with 13 anglers landed 114 rockfish, 10 red rockfish, 4 cabezon, 2 lingcod, and 2 copper rockfish.
